If you look down and spot a shiny, copper-colored coin on the sidewalk, you just found a penny!
Every penny has a value of 1 cent, which we write with a special symbol: 1Β’.
What happens when you have a whole handful of pennies instead of just one?

Counting by 1s

Since each penny is worth 1 cent, finding the total value means we just count by 1s.
Imagine you want to buy a cool sticker that costs 8Β’. How would you count your coins?

Worked Example: 8 Pennies

Point to each coin one at a time as you count out loud so you do not miss any.
Always write the cent sign (Β’Β’) after your number so everyone knows you are talking about money, not just plain numbers.
Whenever you see a pile of pennies, just tap and count: 1Β’, 2Β’, 3Β’, 4Β’, and you will have your total in no time!
