Imagine reaching into your pocket and pulling out a shiny handful of silver and copper coins. How do you find out if you have enough money to buy a sticker?
To find the total, we need to know each coin's value and use a clever counting order.

Meet the Coins

A penny is made of copper-colored metal and is worth 1 cent (1Β’1Β’). A nickel is larger, silver-colored, and is worth 5 cents (5Β’5Β’).
What is the best way to count them when they are all mixed together in a pile?

Step 1: Sort and Start Big

Always sort your coins into groups and count the coin with the greater value first. That means we always count nickels before pennies.
Counting by 5s from zero is much easier than trying to add 5 to an odd number later.
Once our nickels are counted, how do we add the pennies without getting mixed up?

Step 2: The Switch Strategy

First, skip count your nickels by fives (5,10,155, 10, 15). Then, switch your brain to counting by ones for the pennies (16,17,18,1916, 17, 18, 19).
