What if you had to walk across a room, but every single step was exactly half the size of your foot?
You wouldn't count by whole numbers like 1,2,3 β you would count by fraction steps!
A unit fraction is any fraction with a top number (numerator) of 1, like 41β, 31β, or 21β.
To count along a number line by a unit fraction, we split every whole number space into equal parts matching the bottom number (denominator).

What happens when you keep hopping past 1?
Hopping Forward Past One
When you take four hops of 41β, you land on 44β, which equals one whole.
One more hop lands on 45β, which we can write as the mixed number 141β because it is 1 whole plus 41β more.
A common mistake is resetting back to 41β after 1 and forgetting the whole number in front β remember to keep that 1 as you keep moving right!
Can we walk backward along the line just as easily?
Counting Backward by Fractions
To count backward, we subtract one unit fraction with each hop to the left.
