Chemical formulas and molar masses (Mrโ) are strictly defined in grams per mole (g/mol), which means every mass in a problem must be converted to grams before you can find moles.
So how do we seamlessly step between microscopic milligrams and massive industrial shipments?
The Metric Mass Ladder
In the metric system, standard mass units change by consistent factors of 1,000 (103).
When moving from a larger unit to a smaller unit, you multiply by 1,000 because the same amount of matter divides into a greater number of smaller pieces.
