If you slice a juice bar into 10 equal pieces and eat 3 of them, you just ate 103β of the bar.
Did you know you can write that exact same amount without using a fraction line?

How does our place value system show pieces that are smaller than one whole?
The Tenths Place
A decimal point is a dot that separates whole numbers on the left from fractional parts on the right.
The first position directly to the right of the dot is the tenths place, which counts how many tenths of a whole you have.
πInteractive diagram
Because one tenth means 1 out of 10 equal parts, the fraction 101β is written as 0.1 in decimal form.
So if you have 6 tenths, 106β simply becomes 0.6.
What happens if we look at all the tenths together on a single number line?
Fractions and Decimals on a Line
Every fraction with a denominator of 10 lands on the exact same point on a number line as its decimal twin.
