Imagine finding two mystery treasure boxes: one holds 42 shiny coins, and the other holds 38. How can we prove which box gives us more treasure?
To compare numbers without guessing, mathematicians use three special comparison symbols.

The Comparison Symbols

The greater than symbol (>>) and less than symbol (<<) always open wide toward the bigger number, just like a hungry alligator.
How do we know which number is bigger when both numbers have two digits?

Step 1: Compare the Tens

Every two-digit number is made of tens and ones. Because one ten is worth ten whole units, the tens place always has the most power.
Always look at the digit on the far left first β€” the number with more tens is always the greater number.
Watch out for a tricky trap: 38 has 8 ones, but 52 is still bigger because 5 tens beats 3 tens every single time!
What should we do if both numbers have the exact same number of tens?

Step 2: Compare the Ones
