The Technological Cage: The Icebox
Early film cameras used loud, clattering electric motors that overpowered early recording equipment. To prevent the microphoneβwhich was omnidirectional and picked up noise from every angleβfrom capturing the whirring motor, technicians locked the camera and operator inside a massive soundproof booth nicknamed the icebox.
These booths were stifling, heavy, and could only pan slightly through a thick glass window, completely eliminating tracking shots and crane movements.
