A disease is any condition that impairs the normal functioning of an organism. In medicine and biology, we divide diseases into two broad categories based on how they originate and spread.

Communicable diseases are infectious illnesses caused by microscopic organisms called pathogensβspecifically bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protists.
Because pathogens reproduce and transfer between hosts via airborne droplets, contaminated water, bodily fluids, or animal vectors (like mosquitoes), these diseases spread from organism to organism.

Non-communicable diseases are conditions that cannot be transmitted between people or organisms. They tend to last for a long time and progress slowly.
Instead of an invading pathogen, an NCD results from the interaction of internal genetic factors with external environmental and lifestyle influences.
