A toy robot dog can walk, bark, and even chase a ball when you press a button. But is that robot actually alive?
To decide whether something is living or non-living, scientists check for seven specific activities called life processes.
How do we remember all seven without getting them mixed up?
Meet MRS GREN
Scientists use the handy name MRS GREN as a memory trick, where each letter stands for one of the seven life processes.
πCreate an interactive visual banner showing the letters M-R-S G-R-E-N arranged horizontally. Each letter is inside a colorful circular badge with a clear icon and title underneath: M - Movement (running sneaker), R - Respiration (energy spark), S - Sensitivity (eye/ear sensor), G - Growth (seedling to tree), R - Reproduction (parent and baby bird), E - Excretion (waste droplet), N - Nutrition (apple and leaf). Card background is clean white with rounded 12px corners, dark navy text #1e2945, subtle borders #e6e6e6, and warm friendly pastel accents for each badge.
Let's look at what the first three lettersβM, R, and Sβreally mean for animals and plants.
The First Three: M, R, and S
Movement means changing position. Animals move their whole bodies to find food, while plants move slowly by turning their stems toward the sun.
Respiration is the chemical process inside living cells that releases energy from food. It is not the same as breathing, which is just moving air in and out of lungs.
Sensitivity is the ability to notice and react to surroundings, like a cat pricking its ears at a sound or a sunflower tracking the daylight.
πCreate a 3-column visual comparison card for Movement, Respiration, and Sensitivity. Each column has two small rows: 'In Animals' and 'In Plants'. Movement shows a cheetah sprinting vs a plant stem bending toward a window. Respiration shows food breaking down into cellular energy sparks (for both). Sensitivity shows a rabbit hearing an owl vs a plant sensing touch/light. Bright icons, simple bold labels, responsive layout.
Once an organism has energy and senses its world, what must it do to survive and make new life?
