Imagine trying to tile a bedroom floor shaped like the letter L or U.
Since there is no single formula for an "L-shape," you can slice the weird room into simple rectangles, find each area, and add them together.
The Rectangle Foundation
The area of a flat shape is the total number of square units needed to cover its surface without gaps or overlaps.
For any rectangle, we calculate area by multiplying its length by its width (Area=lΓw).
πInteractive 2D visual explaining rectangle area. Display a rectangle of width 4 units and height 3 units on a clean grid. Animate individual 1x1 grid squares lighting up one by one in blue (#22b7ff), counting up to 12. Show the formula text clearly: 4 units Γ 3 units = 12 square units.
What happens when straight-edged walls meet only at 90-degree right angles to make unusual shapes?
Slicing L-Shaped Figures
A composite rectilinear figure is any shape made entirely of straight lines meeting at right angles. To decompose means to break a shape apart into smaller, simpler pieces.
This relies on the Additive Property of area: the total area of any composite figure equals the sum of its non-overlapping parts (Atotalβ=A1β+A2β+β―+Anβ).
Through precise Area Formula Application, we calculate the area of each individual sub-rectangle using its own dimensions: Aiβ=liβΓwiβ.
Let's find the area of an L-shape with a total height of 8Β cm, a base of 7Β cm, a top width of 3Β cm, and a right-side height of 3Β cm.
πA clear diagram showing an L-shaped figure. The vertical left edge is 8 cm, bottom base is 7 cm, top edge is 3 cm, and right vertical edge is 3 cm. An interactive toggle button switches between two split styles: (1) Vertical cut: Rectangle A is 3 cm Γ 8 cm (Area = 24), Rectangle B is 4 cm Γ 3 cm (Area = 12), Total = 36 cmΒ². (2) Horizontal cut: Rectangle A is 3 cm Γ 5 cm (Area = 15), Rectangle B is 7 cm Γ 3 cm (Area = 21), Total = 36 cmΒ². Highlight the cut line as a dashed red line.
