In 1902, Ernest Rutherford and Frederick Soddy discovered that radioactivity causes atoms of one element to spontaneously disintegrate into another, obeying two unbreakable conservation laws.
The total mass number (top numbers) must be equal on both sides of the arrow, and the total atomic number (bottom numbers) must also be equal on both sides.

Alpha (Ξ±) Decay
An alpha particle is identical to a helium-4 nucleus, consisting of 2 protons and 2 neutrons, written as 24βHe or 24βΞ±.
Because an alpha particle carries away 4 units of mass and 2 units of positive charge, the daughter nucleus always loses 4 from its mass number and 2 from its atomic number.
