Unbalanced Versus Balanced Cables
An unbalanced line (like a standard guitar TS cable or RCA lead) uses two conductors: a center wire carrying the audio signal and an outer metal shield acting as electrical ground.
When electromagnetic interference (EMI) from power transformers or stage lighting radiates into the cable, that noise contaminates the signal path directly.

The Differential Magic
In 1881, Alexander Graham Bell patented the twisted pair cable after finding that running two mirrored telephone lines side-by-side canceled out cross-talk from nearby telegraph wires.
A balanced audio cable uses three conductors: Hot (pin 2 on an XLR), Cold (pin 3), and Shield/Ground (pin 1).
The source transmits the normal signal (+S) along the Hot wire and creates a 180โ polarity inverted copy (โS) along the Cold wire.
Because the Hot and Cold wires are twisted tightly together inside the cable, external common-mode noise (N) leaks into both wires in equal amounts and in the same phase.
