If you look at a globe, you will find giant patches of land called continents, and smaller regions called countries.
Almost every continent is shared by dozens of different nations β except for one very special place on Earth.
So, how can one single name belong to both a whole continent and just one country?
Continent Versus Country
A continent is one of Earth's seven massive pieces of land, while a country is an area of land run by its own single government.
For example, the continent of Europe contains over 40 separate countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and Spain.

Australia is the only landmass on Earth that is both an entire continent and a single country all by itself.
Because it is completely surrounded by water and sits alone between oceans, geographers sometimes call it the 'island continent'.
Now that we know what it is, where exactly do you find it on a spinning globe?
Finding Australia on the World Map
Earth is divided into two halves by an imaginary belt around the middle called the Equator.
Everything below this line sits in the Southern Hemisphere, which is where Australia is nestled β giving it the famous nickname 'Down Under'.
