Imagine building a grassy yard for a puppy: how much fence do you need for the border, and how many grass tiles fit inside?
These two questions measure completely different things, and you can solve both using simple math operations.
Fence vs. Grass
The perimeter is the total distance all the way around the outside edge of a shape.
The area is the amount of flat space covered on the inside, counted in square units.
πInteractive diagram
To find the perimeter, you add all the outer sides together: Perimeter=4+3+4+3=14 units.
To find the area of a rectangle, you multiply length by width because the squares line up in equal rows: Area=4Γ3=12 square units.
What if one side length is missing, but you already know the total perimeter?
Finding a Missing Side
Opposite sides of a rectangle are always equal in length.
If a rectangle has a perimeter of 20Β cm and a length of 6Β cm, two sides are already 6+6=12Β cm.
Subtract that from 20Β cm to get 8Β cm, then split 8 in half to find each missing width: 8Γ·2=4Β cm.
