Imagine you have 24 red marbles, 31 blue marbles, and 13 green marbles all mixed together in a big jar.
Counting them one by one would take forever, but splitting every number into tens and ones lets you solve it in a snap.
How do we gather all those pieces together without losing count?

Collect the Tens First

Every two-digit number is made of tens and ones. In the number 24, the 2 means 2 tens, or 20.
To add 24+31+1324 + 31 + 13, start by collecting only the tens from each number: 20+30+1020 + 30 + 10.
Now you have 60 from your tens! But what about the leftover ones sitting on the table?

Collect the Ones

Next, gather the ones from each number: 4 from 24, 1 from 31, and 3 from 13.
Add them up together: 4+1=54 + 1 = 5, and 5+3=85 + 3 = 8.
