I recently asked a close family friend how she had fared during the COVID-19 pandemic, to which she replied: “I'm grateful to have been equipped with the skills I need to make it through these difficult times.” That simple phrase struck me – it exemplified the importance of having the necessary tools to navigate the ever-changing world. As a soon-to-be college student, I strive to do the same: develop the aptitudes needed to excel in our fast-paced world. That is why I am determined to pursue a degree in computer science: such a degree will give me the essential skills to relentlessly pursue creativity and innovation. Growing up, I have always had a knack for always striving to understand how and why things worked. Whether it was disassembling the family computer, or playing with those miniature robotic dogs at my cousin’s birthday, I was always searching for the source of functionality. That fascination with engineering first became apparent in my math classes in high school — I loved to study how logically constructed instructions could produce outputs. Information technology was the perfect synthesis between my creative spirit and obsession with precision; and I sought to hone my skills in the field. As such, I decided to pursue the College Board Mentorship Program. I worked as an intern at a start-up, developing energy and expense management software. Here, I was able to observe firsthand how insistently I could use my coding proficiency to provide meaningful solutions to daily problems. I immediately fell in love with the profession's universal applicability in virtually all walks of life. Additionally, the mentors at the start-up shared how imperative communication and teamwork are when working on a project; the daily meetings and consultations accentuated the need for collaboration if one was to successfully complete a project. It did not take long for me to realize that computer science was the route I desired to pursue in college. From then on, I sought to complete programming tasks, and other exercises, outside of the program using online coding resources. I also participated in hackathons, to get a feeling of what a commercial team setting was like. I got to script apps and websites, and cooperate with other like-minded people to explore different facets of coding. Also, I learned to work efficiently to a deadline, culminating in the finished product at the hackathon's conclusion. In the years since, I have volunteered at a green technology startup in high school, working closely with the CEO and other members of the IT team. I acted as the liaison between the team members and the CEO: I had to communicate the usability of products in terms that non-tech people could understand. This experience taught me how to communicate in a professional environment, and introduced me to the world of green tech. As such, a college degree in computer science would perfectly fit the ambitions I have for myself. I am looking forward to coursework in programming and software development, which I believe will give me a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of codifying technology. I would also gain insight from development labs and entrepreneurship courses, which would afford me valuable knowledge on how to turn coding proficiency into intellectual credential and entrepreneurial savvy. If admitted to your college, I would also seek to draw upon the great resources you provide to enhance my coding skills. I would be immensely excited to participate in the knowledgeable and rich-experience student clubs that would be collectively working on projects Together. Furthermore, I am interested in interfacing with companies and networks at your college that would make me familiar with the very cutting edge of the computer science field, and allow me to develop a portfolio of work to demonstrate my aptitude. Ultimately, I am eager to locallydiscover exactly how far I can go with my passion for engineering. Your college is the perfect platform to facilitate the launch and development of my potential in this field. I recognize and am motivated by your esteemed faculty and the extraordinary opportunities your college provides. For these reasons, I humbly ask to be admitted to your college and embark on this academic journey to explore and eventually master the ever-evolving world of computer science.
