As a soon-to-be college student, I strive to do the same: develop the aptitudes needed to excel in our fast-paced world. That is why I am determined to pursue a degree in computer science: such a degree will give me the essential skills to relentlessly pursue creativity and innovation. Growing up, I have always had a knack for always striving to understand how and why things worked. Whether it was disassembling the family computer, or playing with those miniature robotic dogs at my cousin’s birthday, I was always searching for the source of functionality. That fascination with engineering first became apparent in my math classes in high school — I loved to study how logically constructed instructions could produce outputs. Information technology was the perfect synthesis between my creative spirit and obsession with precision; and I sought to hone my skills in the field. As such, I decided to pursue the College Board Mentorship Program. I worked as an intern at a start-up, developing energy and expense management software. Here, I was able to observe firsthand how insistently I could use my coding proficiency to provide meaningful solutions to daily problems. I immediately fell in love with the profession's universal applicability in virtually all walks of life. Additionally, the mentors at the start-up shared how imperative communication and teamwork are when working on a project; the daily meetings and consultations accentuated the need for collaboration if one was to successfully complete a project. It did not take long for me to realize that computer science was the route I desired to pursue in college. From then on, I sought to complete programming tasks, and other exercises, outside of the program using online coding resources. I also participated in hackathons, to get a feeling of what a commercial team setting was like. I got to script apps and websites, and cooperate with other like-minded people to explore different facets of coding. Also, I learned to work efficiently to a deadline, culminating in the finished product at the hackathon's conclusion. In the years since, I have volunteered at a green technology startup in high school, working closely with the CEO and other members of the IT team. I acted as the liaison between the team members and the CEO: I had to communicate the usability of products in terms that non-tech people could understand. This experience taught me how to communicate in a professional environment, and introduced me to the world of green tech. As such, a college degree in computer science would perfectly fit the ambitions I have for myself. I eventually put together my own computer with second-hand parts from my local electronics store. It was first computer building project, and it opened a world of possibilities for me—from gaming to networking and programming. In my teenage years, I began to explore the more advanced aspects of computer science and transitioned to coding and systems design. I began to appreciate the application of theory to practical application and the creativity required to create new systems. As I entered high school, I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in computer science and firmly planned to do this by attending an Ivy League college. To prepare for college studies and to gain experience in the field of computer science, I took part in several internships and summer programs at such places as Microsoft and Symantec.
